What is GELTS?
Long story short, a university club dedicated itself to all of its students. We started with the phrase "For the students, by the students" and while it is true, we expanded that idea with entertaining activities, academic content, and everything else as a "treatment".
The core of GELTS was built in September 2020. Due to the pandemic, we had lost so many opportunities. Socialising, the ability to interact with the very classmate sitting next to you, our instructors, motivation, energy, and so much more have been lost. We decided that it was enough "losing" and took our stand against the negativity that surrounded the entire world.
"GELTS is not your ordinary student club that will announce events and expects a crowd at every event. It is more."
- Berke O. YILMAZ (President)
The foundation of GELTS is based on 3 main pillars:
- Improvement (Personal, social, professional, academic, you name it)
- Co-operation (Because we need each other for better "us")
- Discovery (New us, new traits, new knowledge, a new future)
This foundation finds its meaning when students like you become a part of us. It is thanks to you that such foundation remains fresh and strong.
"The best part of GELTS was being able to keep up with my new friends while making new ones. I learnt a lot and contributed to GELTS myself. I will try to socialize through the club while also having fun this term!"
- Mustafa ŞEN (ELT, Junior)
What did we do during the termdemic (pandemic + term)?
- Hosted GELTUS Conference, a conference which became the traidition of our department and enriched by participants from across Turkey.
- Participated in over 17 virtual ELT webinars
- Hosted 5 virtual Speaking Club activities
- Hosted 4 virtual Phoenix Talk events which welcomed academicians from our department
- Hosted 2 virtual Academic Disc. Panels to discuss academic topics
- Hosted 4 virtual game events (Among Us, Draw.io, etc.)
- Hosted 2 movie nights (Halloween & The Big Lebowski)
- Created our own Notion page. All of the secret intel in one place. Click it
- Published our official e-newspaper (Environment-friendly + informative!)
- Created our own blog
"Joining folks of Gazi ELT was great. I appreciate all the efforts put into the Academic and general events. Looking forward to what the team prepares next for their community!"
- Ali ATA
What's next?
It has been a tough year for all of us. Some of us left the campus after seeing it for a short time, some of us never experienced our campus despite being a student for a year. We will patch our wounds.
We will enhance our activities. We will:
- Build a community growing ever stronger, together.
- Host club meetings (At a coffee, at different social events around Ankara, and more)
- Host Phoenix Talks (Our meetings with different academicians will hopefully take place in a real environment, not a virtual one)
- Speaking Clubs (Working on that!)
- GELTS Participates (Which we join academic events held by other professionals)
- And more.
We are aiming to reach everyone who wants to improve themselves. Do you want to socialize? Hang out with fellow club members. Get even better at your professional development? Grab a seat for each of our academic events. Or perhaps you just need some folks to join you for a chaotic lunch break? We got that too. Maybe.
Thanks for being here. We hope we can enrich your experience at Gazi, which is already a great foundation of education, and leave a smile on your face while creating a sense of community. I am looking forward to everything we will be doing!
Sincerely,
Berke Oğuz YILMAZ
President
